The Languages of Magic examines magic as a process of communication with the unmanifest in order to bring out desired changes – an approach known as semiurgy or the semiotic theory of magic. After looking at core ideas in linguistics, semiotics, and the philosophy of language the book then pivots to several case studies applying the ideas to historical, modern, and post-modern examples of magic in use. Schools and techniques analyzed include:

  • the Greek Magical Papyri
  • selections from the Nag Hammadi Library
  • curse tablets and execration texts
  • runes
  • sigil magic
  • the magic of Aleister Crowley and Thelema
  • Enochian magic from its roots through to its adaptations by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later groups
  • chaos magick
  • the early Church of Satan
  • The Temple of Set
  • Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth

Includes appendices by Don Webb on how magicians use and create fiction, and Brenda Yagmin on city magic through a semiotic lens (see magialoci.com).

Infernal Geometry and the Left-Hand Path reveals the history of angular magic as developed with the Church of Satan and Temple of Set. It focuses on the origins of angular magic inspired by the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft and the photography theories of William Mortensen, and takes a detailed look at the foundational rites of angular magic found in Anton LaVey’s The Satanic Rituals (Avon, 1972):

  • Die Elektrischen Vorspiele (“The Electrical Preludes”) by Anton LaVey
  • The Ceremony of the Nine Angles by Michael A. Aquino
  • The Call to Cthulthu by Michael A. Aquino
